Le patch de Françoise : le manteau de Joseph ! Joseph's Coat - a quilt by Françoise

Depuis quelques mois, Françoise travaille sur un patch ambitieux au nom biblique : le Manteau de Joseph (ou Joseph's Coat, en anglais) et il est terminé !

Mais pas facile à photographier en entier ... malheureusement, ici, il manque les bordures.

For the past months, Françoise has been busy on a Joseph's Coat quilt and it's now finished!

But not easy to photograph ... unfortunately, here, the borders are missing.

Tout a commencé dans la boutique Le Patchwork d' Emma, à Cauchy, à côté de Saint Quentin, où Françoise a repéré un patch Joseph's Coat réalisé avec des tissus Kaffe Fassett accroché au mur.

It all started in Le Patchwork d'Emma quilt shop (near Saint Quentin, in Northern France), where Françoise spotted an all-over Joseph's Coat quilt on a wall, done in Kaffe Fassett fabrics.

Les tissus (une collection de batiks d'Edyta Sitar) achetés, Françoise s'est mise au travail : elle a fait un brouillon de son top pour le choix des couleurs et la disposition globale (différente du patch de départ), a construit son gabarit au compas et, grâce à un collègue, a pu le faire découper au laser dans du MDF. Nous avons appelé ce gabarit "la lunule" comme la forme à la base des ongles !

Once the fabric was bought (a batik collection by Edyta Sitar), Françoise set to work: she drafted the top in order to organise the colours and design (not all-over), drew up her template with a compass and, thanks to a colleague, had it laser cut out of an MDF board. We took to calling the shape of the template "the lunula" after the half-moon shape at the base of fingernails!

De temps en temps, Françoise venait nous parler de son avancée sur ce projet : thermocoller le tissu, faire un point de zigzag machine pour appliquer les formes etc.

Once in a while, Françoise would share her progress with us: fusing the fabric, machine appliqueing the shapes with a zigzag stitch etc.

Un jour, elle a trouvé dans une boutique aux Pays-Bas (Quiltshop Leur) un tissu French General en grande largeur pour le dos.

One day, she found a wide French General fabric for the backing in a quilt shop in the Netherlands (Quiltshop Leur).

Puis est venue l'étape du matelassage. Brigitte Dumaine s'en est chargée et l'a réalisé sur sa machine long arm (du matelassage "spaghetti" et des lunules dans les zones sans appliqué). Françoise est ravie du résultat ! Ici, une photo d'un détail.

And then came the quilting. Brigitte Dumaine took care of it and custom quilted the quilt on her long arm (a combination of stippling and half-moon shapes in the negative space). Françoise is thrilled with the result! Here is a detail.

Enfin, Françoise a choisi de terminer le patch sans biais, mais avec le tissu du dos (technique du "facing").

To finish, Françoise didn't do any binding but used facing instead.

C'est un grand patch (pour un lit de 2 personnes), donc les photos ne sont pas faciles à prendre mais nous voulions le partager avec vous !

It's a large quilt (for a king-sized bed) so taking pictures isn't always easy but we wanted to share it with you!
